St George Illawarra have given Paul McGregor free rein to plan for the future, after appointing him as their coach for the next three seasons.

McGregor came in as interim head coach in May, after Steve Price was sacked.

He has won six of his 11 games in charge, and the former Dragons skipper has impressed the club enough to earn a long-term deal.

He said: “It was an absolute honour to play and captain the Dragons and to now be given the opportunity to be the head coach on a full-time basis is an even greater honour.

“When I first began coaching after retiring from playing, I did this because I felt that I had something to offer and I wanted to share my experience and make players both better players and better people and this will continue to be a guiding principle for me.”

McGregor admitted he had taken over in difficult circumstances earlier this year and had had concerns at the start, but said he had loved every minute of it so far.

He said the response of the players, the challenge and the positive rewards had given him the desire to put his hand up for the role full-time.

McGregor added: “Knowing that I will here for the next three years now allows me the opportunity to have a good look at our squad, our juniors, our systems and recruitment and make decisions about what is needed to return our club to the top of the game.”

The former Origin and Test centre’s contract was confirmed on Friday, ending speculation the Dragons were interested in Test coach Tim Sheens.

The club are one win outside the top eight going into this weekend’s clash with the Titans, who are 2.90, having won 34-16 away to the Raiders in Canberra last time out.

The Dragons are 1.90 conceding a 7.5-points start against Gold Coast.
