Anthony Minichiello is delighted to get the chance to go out on a high with the Sydney Roosters, but says he doesn’t need another premiership to send him into retirement.
Minichiello is aware much of the focus is on him going into the NRL finals, not just because he is the captain of the reigning premiers.
He played his final Roosters home game last week, and on Saturday will clock up his 300th NRL appearance in the qualifying final against Penrith Panthers, who are 4.00.
The 34-year-old then stands to equal Luke Ricketson’s record for most Roosters games in his next match, and potentially become the most-capped player in the club’s 106-year history in the grand final.
Minichiello accepts there’s no way of completely ignoring the personal accolades during the finals, but has spoken to coach Trent Robinson and the team about focusing on each game.
Speaking of his 300-game milestone, he said: “It will be a special moment, but at the end of the day this is a semi-final and we have to win.
“Emotion only fuels you for so long in a game. After five or 10 minutes you start to get tired and all of that stuff goes out the window.”
He said he was still determined to enjoy the final stages of his career, having confirmed after talking to his wife Terri that retiring was definitely the right move.
“We had a lot of discussions about it and she thought I could play on,” he said. “I probably could have, if I wanted to. I could do it all again, but I’m really happy with my decision.”
Minichiello said he didn’t need a third premiership to make his career complete, though he still felt the excitement as much as ever.
Meanwhile, the Panthers, who are 1.91 with a 10.5-points start against the Roosters, have announced the re-signings of Matt Moylan and Bryce Cartwright.
Moylan has extended his stay until the end of 2017 while Cartwright has inked an extension through to 2018.
